Alva’s bedroom at Marble House, which was a 39th birthday present from her first husband. Alva built, helped design, and owned many mansions during her lifetime; at one point she had a grand total of nine. She was also one of the first female members of the American Institute of Architects, and a contemporary of hers said that “she loved nothing better than to be knee deep in mortar.”
